1. Theoretical Base of Teaching Social Science
 
Objectives
 
The student teachers:
 
Become aware of the scope and significance of social science as a school subject
Internalise the aims and objectives of teaching social science in the interface of national goals
Develop the ability to integrate the study of various subjects constituting social science
Develop ability to assess the principles and theories applicable to the teaching-learning process.
 
Content
 
Unit I: Social Science - A Unique Discipline
 
The meaning and scope of social science as a unique discipline. - Social Studies and Social Science - differentiated. - Need and importance of social science in the modern age.
 
Unit II: Objectives
 
General aims and values of teaching social science. - Specific objectives of teaching social science with special reference to cognitive domain, affective domain and psychomotor domain. The special role played by social science education in the inculcation of the values of:
National Integration - International understanding - Democracy, socialism, secularism.
 
Unit III: Social Science and other Subjects
 
Correlation and fusion as pedagogical principles, with special reference to social science. Correlation with History, Geography, Economics, Civics, Literature, Mathematics and Science., Correlation with life.
 
Unit IV: Instructional Strategies
 
1 Principles related to instruction. - individual difference – motivation – grading –
2 Instructional approaches:
The stress on process of learning rather than mere knowledge of content; learning considered as learning to learn. - Inductive-Deductive approach in generalising concepts, principles and process related to social studies. - Learning through observation of immediate and remote phenomena. - Multimedia approach - Multi-methodology approach.
3 Methods of teaching
Traditional methods vs modern methods of teaching Social Science - Comparison of basic principles - Essentials for effective teaching - How theories of learning influence instructional strategies with special reference to behavioural theories, humanistic theories, cognitive theories. - Components of an effective lesson.
4 Innovative strategies of learning:

  Importance of planning instruction
Stages of planning - Year plan, Unit plan, Lesson plan and Resource procurement plan.

Development of Professionalism: The special significance of continuous education, role of inservice education in the up gradation of content as well as instructional strategies.
