1. Theoretical Base of Teaching Sanskrit
 
Objectives
 
The student teachers:
 
Acquire knowledge of the significance of learning Sanskrit.
Understand the psychological theories and develop ability to apply them in the teaching of Sanskrit.
Get acquainted with modern trends and methods of teaching prose and poetry.
Acquire grammatical concepts and principles in Sanskrit and become capable of writing simple composition in correct Sanskrit.
 
Content
 
Unit I: Learning Sanskrit - Its Significance
 
Sanskrit - a world language. Its literature - universal and classical. Significance of learning Sanskrit - comparison with Latin. How Sanskrit links with other languages.
 
Unit II: Theories Applicable to Learning Sanskrit
 
Behaviourist theory, Cognitive theory, Reception learning, Reading comprehension theory, Meaningful verbal learning theory, Natural development theory.
 
Unit III: Teaching of Prose and Poetry
 
(i) Prose
Aims of teaching prose; use of sentence patterns; understanding and use of correct grammatical forms; appreciation of literature written in different forms and style; different types of prose lessons; characteristic of a good textbook.
Aims of teaching Sanskrit with non-detailed text.
(ii) Poetry
Aims of teaching poetry in comparison with those of teaching prose; stress on affective changes like appreciation, broadening pupils' imagination.
Unit IV: Teaching of Grammar and Composition
(i) Grammar
Place of grammar, unconscious assimilation of grammatically correct forms; approaches to the study of grammatical concepts and principles.
(ii) Composition
General principles; oral work to precede written work; choice of subjects to 't students' interest; guided writing to free writing of composition; types of imposition work.

Modern Instructional Strategies - Sanskrit
 
Objectives
 
The student teachers:
 
Get acquainted with modern principles and trends in the construction and organization of Sanskrit curriculum.
Develop ability to use different types of skills in teaching and learning of Sanskrit.
Become conversant with modern methods and strategies for the instruction of Sanskrit.
Get familiar with modern methods of assessing students in Sanskrit language.
 
Content:
 
Unit I: Curriculum
 
Principles of curriculum construction - Relevance of prose and poetry - Criteria for the selection of prose lessons and poems - Nature of vocabulary, grammar and prosody to be presented for secondary classes.
 
Unit II: Acquisition of Language Skills
 
(i) Developing comprehension skills
Techniques and materials for developing listening and reading skills.
Techniques of reading - reading for comprehension; reading aloud and silent reading.
(ii) Developing productive skills
Techniques of developing speaking and writing skills.
(jjj) Developing functional skills
Requirements for using Sanskrit language in different situation; practice in translation, developing skills in using Sanskrit words and phrases in other languages.
 
Unit III: Modern Instructional Methods and Strategies - Cognitive Models
 
Gagne's hierarchical learning - Concept attainment model of teaching Sanskrit - Advance Organizer model - Information Processing model
 
Unit IV- Modern Instructional Strategies - Thinking Models
 
Inductive-deductive model - Constructivist model - Inquiry training model - Interactive model.
 
Unit V: Assessing Students
 
Principles of language testing Characteristics of a good test Types of questions in a test Types of tests and their purposes.
